Q: Do I need to put stones on the bottom of the planter bag before the soil?

Hi, thank you for your question. We do not recommend to put stones on the bottom of the planter containers, below is three reasons: First, the layer of stones may lead to root damage in plants. Second, it takes up room making the pot much smaller for its plant. Third, water does not pass through stones at a container's bottom as quickly as it passed through soil. And soil becomes saturated before water moves out of it and into stones, which is a situation that could kill the plant growing in the pot. Based on those reasons, our suggestion is not to put stones on. If you concern about the issue of drainage of the pots, please be assure. Our pots provide good drainage to prevent overwatering. : ) -Gardzen

I purchased 140 of the 7 gallon bags. All measure 14" in diameter X 12" deep. To calculate the volume of a cylindrical bag the formula is pi times the radius squared times the depth. 3.14 X 7 X 7 X 12 = 1846 cubic inches or 7.99 US. gallons.

Q: Can I plant a tree seedling in these and then plant it in the ground in the grow bag to protect the tree from gophers?

I would not. Several reasons. First, the bag is not constructed to be planted in the ground and used as a deterrent. Second, I'm fairly certain that a gopher will be able to chew through the bag. Third, you might want to google "gopher proofing seedling trees", there you can find a few YouTube videos on creating a wire basket to grow the trees in, Amazon sells the hardware cloth (screen) required to fashion a basket. I feel your pain, we planted trees once and lost them to gophers. After creating baskets for the new saplings, we never had that problem again. I even do the same thing for ANY bulbs that I plant. Let them find wild food to eat. Not the bulbs/plants I spend my money on. Hope this helps.
