While this book might make some demand upon the intellect, I do not think it correct to have so slated it as the other reviewer did in 2008.Campbell presents a 'marriage' of the exoteric, Marseilles pattern Tarot, in a celebrated essay, with the Hero's journey for which we consider Campbell our foremost interpreter.Roberts, much admired by Campbell, assesses the Rider Waite Tarot - the Esoteric - from a broad perspective which includes many sources, and some surprising insights into the Tarot from another perspective.I was urged to purchase this book for Campbell's essay alone. I was not disappointed, despite its brevity.Robert's contribution is extensive and deserving of deep examination if the Rider Waite is your thing, whether because you want to further explore that yourself, or perhaps wish to understand the evolution of ideas concerning the esoteric Tarot throughout the Twentieth Century.Do not discount this book after reading the former review!

If you don't know what to do with your money and have already read all the books in the world about Joseph Campbell and Tarot then buy this book. If you still decide to buy this book you will savour some bad writing and a complete absence of ideas. And because is Christmas you can still turn this to your favor and offer the book to your worst enemy.

Must have for any Campbell fan!

I second the other reviewers - it's a magnificent, advanced-level book but the false advertising on the cover left a bad taste in my mouth. Still, Richard Roberts is worth reading in his own right (if you're into Jungian Tarot also check out his incredible "The Original Tarot & You", feat. the Jungian spread and countless reading transcripts, incl. one for Joseph Campbell himself!). Campbell's essay (Marseilles-based) is delightful and quick. The rest gets Very Heavy Very Fast, but if you're into the more academic side of Tarot, Numerological & Alchemical contexts, etc. - you won't be disappointed. (Keep in mind it's not really a how-to book; plenty of those around, though.)

WoW, it is an excellent book. I would recomened, it has so much detail and shared knowladge, it was absolutly wonderful, a great book to own. I love it

Just started to read it when I got it.It's an essential book for all tarot readers and students of that art!
