Genuine 23.5 ct gold transfer starter kit
It arrived in a carboard box whick was filled with polystyrene fillings. There was a tin box basically in that. A decent tin box with a hinged lid and fancied up with paintwork. But at the end of the day its just a tin box, which I hadn't asked for. In that were a load more polystyrene fillings and when I had removed them there , looking quite forlorn in the bottom, were 2 brushes, a container of glue and an envelope type thing with the gold sheet stuff inside. Noteable by their absence were instructions. This is a starter kit so instructions are a must I would suggest.. I then saw that the glue was 3 hrs - not as advertised. Initial thoughts were crikey is this what I have paid for ???. £43.09 for a tin with 2 brushes some glue and a bit of gold. I didn't look closely at the gold till I came to start my project and then realised they were transfers and I'd got mixed up between adverts. That made things seem even worse. Nevertheless I continued with my project which was a small 8 x 6 photo frame. In summary I had to put on 3 layers of sheets plus a spec of touching up ( they call these areas " holidays" - not my idea of a holiday) . Admittedly I had to keep turning the work around and this stuff hates being even lightly touched . Did eventually make up a jig to keep the work steady which helped but even then and stressing that I kept the work covered at all times when not working on it and when glue was going off , bits somehow got trapped including 3 hairs. Its safe to say that its not turned out as I had imagined. It looks ok at a distance bit thats about all. So that was one expensive mistake. It would have helped if I had made up my jig at the start but this stuff is a magnet for unwanted bits.It seems to me that the transfers are so thin that the glue soaks through them a bit. I think some of them were tiny flakes of gold that balled up as they are too big for dust. I tried to be really delicate throughout and despite that I was at the end of the day pretty disappointed. The transfer gold is more suited to lettering and small dead flat surfaces I think. Its a big no no that there were no instructions. This could have been cheaper if there was no box. Box not needed - its just embellishment and overall I thought it was over priced. I think I would have fared better with the other gilding kit thats got imitation gold as they are loose leafed and it strikes me that that form would be just that bit more resilient. Anyway its put me right off gold leafing.Shan't be buying again.
