Q: does the grinder mechanism have any plastic holding it in place (not the little adjuster screw bit on the outside)?

Yeah it does and my grinder just broke because there is a plastic structure holding the grinder in place with three struts and that just failed but it did last for a long time at least. Since august 2019

Q: How long have people had them and have they lasted well?

About six months, and they are fine. The salt and pepper come out of the top by the way.

Q: Is it easy to refill? Do you need a screwdriver? Thanks

Very easy to refill. The grinding unit screws off and the opening is nice and wide so no spills.

Q: Sizes given in product dimensions cannot be correct ?? 36cms / 14 ins tall ?? What is the real height & dia, please.

Height is 5 and a quarter inches or 13 and a half centimetres. I didn't measure the diameter.
