The '59 Sound

The Gaslight Anthem top their debut Sink or Swim with this masterful collection of power-punk tunes in the mold of Springsteen, et.al. With their influences to the fore, worn as proudly as Dylan wore Woody Guthrie and Springsteen, Bob Dylan, the boys from Jersey blast through catchy, thought provoking and infectious material they will find hard to better. This is their 'The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle'. While all the tracks are very good to excellent, the first three are show-stoppers. 'Great Expectations', 'The 59 Sound' and 'Lincoln' are as good as it gets. No wonder the Boss is a fan and promoted the band at 2009's Glastonbury and Hard Rock festival by joining them on stage.All of the musicians wring the best out of every song. I love the vocals, the intricate guitar work and the powerhouse drumming and bass playing. One of my choices for album of the year, 2009 (it came out late October 2008).They are in London in October, so hurry up and get tickets. Catch them before it's a stadium only band.

`The 59 Sound' is another storming album from New Jersey boys The Gaslight Anthem. On this album you get a selection of short, punchy tracks that can't help but put a smile on your face and leave you feeling uplifted. It's simple, good rock music that lives up to the legacy of New Jersey musicianship. There are a few Springsteen references on this album that fans of his will notice and will produce a wry smile. The title track stands out, as does `The Backseat' but to be honest there aren't any dud tracks on this album and although it is short, it manages to pack song after song of great music in. Top riff after riff and hook after hook will keep you coming back for more and this makes for one highly recommended album indeed.Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.

A work Colleague handed me his iPod and told me to "have a listen to this!" After previewing this album I decided to buy it. It's brilliant raw rock not unlike early Springsteen which unsurprisingly is cited as one of their influences. As you listen you can imagine them playing on a stage in front of one of those wooden boarded floors in the Mid West or one of those typical Corn Exchange venues found around Britain where the band has a good relationship and inter-action with the audience. It's a great rock n' roll listen!

for me this or handwritten is the standout album form the gaslight anthem, the title track being what hooked me in to trying these guys out in the first place.

As a huge Bruce Springsteen fan I was pleased to hear his influences throughout this album. Although the sound is a little bit heavier than Bruce, or any of the other music I listen to, I find that the lyricism is compelling and at times chilling.It is not an album full of songs that will make you smile to yourself but it is an album which will make you feel like you are listening to a band which has a great future. As a young man I am really pleased to have found a band which is producing quality music and will hopefully do so for the remainder of my young life. So often I find myself looking to the past for great songs and artists and so when I found The Gaslight Anthem I was extremely pleased.

I would never have known about Gaslight Anthem had I not bought Springsteen at Hyde Park and watched Brian Fallon perform with The Boss perhaps the finest rendition of No Surrender I have ever seen. Based on that and the reviews on Amazon I took the plunge and bought The 59 Sound. What a find. Absolutely fantastic album from the first track to the last.Buy it - you won't regret it.

Having just been to watch The Gaslight Anthem play their decade anniversary tour of this album I couldn't believe I'd not actually bought it already. This is a fantastic album, I utterly love it.

New to me, introduced by my son! Love every song even though I'm old enough to be their Granny. Will be getting their other albums. I love to find a new band. Gaslight anthem have shades of The Killers and Springsteen on some of their songs, so give them a go.

La mejor obra de Gaslight junto al Señor and the Queen EP. Lo tengo en CD y lo he decidido comprar en vinilo por la edición especial azul y porque quiero guardarlo como recuerdo. Es un disco para ponerlo en repeat todo el día. Brian pone algo en su música que no pone el resto de gente, y aquí se ve claramente.Respecto a la edición, es un 59 Sound normal pero en azul. En discogs están muy cotizadas este tipo de ediciones, llegando a pagarse bastante más dinero por el vinilo de color que por el negro. El vinilo es precioso, aunque prefiero otras ediciones que hace Gaslight (en amarillo dorado o en blanco) y el precio de 18 euros es de risa. Es un lujazo encontrar ediciones especiales a estos precios. El envío "Premium" tardó 3 días, pero porque lo tuvieron que enviar desde Italia.

Als großer Bruce Springsteen-Fan bin ich über eine Empfehlung auf Gaslight Anthem gestoßen. Daher ziehe ich natürlich auch den Vergleich mit dem Boss, zumal sich die Band selbst ja auf ihn bezieht. Herausgekommen ist eine sehr ordentlich Scheibe und der melodische Rock (mit Punk hat das hier m. E. wenig zu tun) erinnert wirklich zum Teil sehr an den Springsteen der 80er Jahre. Man kann sich wirklich fragen, ob sich Springsteen so anhören würde, wenn er heute noch mal 25 wäre?Allerdings ist das Album meines Erachtens sehr eintönig. Selbst nach mehrfachem Hören fiel und fällt es mir noch immer schwer, die einzelnen Songs voneinander zu unterscheiden. Lediglich das genaue Hinhören auf den Text hilft da ein wenig. Einzig das akustisch gehaltene 'Here is looking at you kid' fällt (positiv) aus dem allgemeinen Rahmen. Vielleicht auch noch 'Even cowgirls get the blues', das wie der Titel verrät, sehr bluesig rüberkommt. Der Rest hört sich aber doch sehr ähnlich an.Was an dem Album besonders auffällt, sind die zahlreichen Zitate vor allem aus Springsteen Songs (I'm on fire, Bobby Jean, No surrender) und die Referenzen an alte Rock- und Soul-Größen der 60er Jahre ('59-Sound eben, Sam Cooke u. a.). Tom Petty wird ebenfalls explizit erwähnt, was die Musik und die Band für jemanden wie mich, der auf diese Musik steht, insgesamt sehr sympathisch macht. Der für mich beste Song des Albums ist 'Miles davis and the cool' (ist grooven hier das richtige Wort? So empfinde ich ihn zumindest).Insgesamt gibt es 4,5 Sterne für ein sehr gelungenes Album, dem einzig die Abwechslung ein wenig fehlt für den vollen 5. Stern. Wer auf den Springsteen der 80er Jahre steht und es gerne auch mal etwas rockiger mag, sollte dem Album auf jeden Fall eine Chance geben.

Vielleicht hätte man noch eine weitere Ballade schreiben, vielleicht die nicht ganz so brillanten Songs weglassen sollen, um ein mustergültiges Rock-Album zu erschaffen. Vielleicht ist das aber gut so, denn sonst hätte man tatsächlich gar nichts zu kritisieren und jedes Wort über dieses unglaubliche Album wäre zu viel. In der Tat sind die Schwächen marginal. Die angedachte Zusatzballade hätte für etwas mehr Abwechslung gesorgt und zu den wenigen Songs, die man nicht sofort ins Lehrbuch für grandiosen Alternativ-Rock übernehmen würde, zähle ich beispielsweise "Casanova, baby!", aber auch in diesem Falle rede ich keinesfalls von einem schlechten Lied. Doch angesichts der Hitdichte wäre es ja geradezu beängstigend, wenn jedes Lied auf dem gleichen Niveau wäre. Andererseits würde das Album auch einen oder zwei Totalausfälle verkraften, denn ihnen gegenüber stünden insbesondere mit "The '59 sound", "Old white lincoln", "Meet my by the river's edge" (mein Favorit der Platte) und "The backseat" Songs, die schlicht und ergreifend zu den Knallern dieser Dekade zählen. Lange her, dass mich so ein relativ simples Werk dermaßen packend konnte. So gar Uni-Seminare müssen ausfallen, um Zeit für dieses Album zu haben.

A Amazon tem fama antiga de empenar os vinis durante o processo de entrega, mas pelo menos tudo o que eu comprei desde Dezembro de 2019 tem vindo em uma embalagem própria pra vinil, e essa acomodada dentro de uma caixa acolchoada com papel. Album toca sem pulo nenhum!

Came from the UK? Took a month+? But decent quality pressing. Not as good as their audiophile pressing of Handwritten but still decent. Its also an older album. No warps.

mehr gibt es dazu nicht zu sagen. Brian Fallon gibt auf dem Album alles, man hat das Gefühl, er lebt seine Songs beim Singen. Teilweise extrem viel Druck in den Songs, ohne dabei zu wild zu wirken. man kommt nicht umher, ab und zu an den Boss zu denken. Für mich keine Ausfälle auf dem Album.

Fantastic album, the one that introduced me to the Gaslight Anthem and since then I've purchased them all and loved them since. Glad to finally get the vinyl version, came in typical Amazon cardboard packaging, and in brand new plastic wrapping.Great band and fantastic album, you won't be disappointed!

Diese Band ist eine von den ganz großen.Ich kann nur jedem empfehlen, sich die Veröffentlichungen dieser Band allesamt zu sichern.Mit dieser Platte würde ich anfangen, obwohl sich chronologisch gesehen die neuste ist. The 59 Sound ist die am besten produzierte Platte von TGA, es finden sich herrliche Melodien, ein nicht zu unterschätzendes Schlagzeug, seichte und nicht aufdringliche Basslines und ein Sänger, der die Herzen der Mädels und die Fassaden der Rocker dahinschmelzen lässt.The Gaslight Anthem treffen den schmalen Grat genau: "es muss süß genug für die Mädels sein und hart genug für die Jungs" (Iggy Pop)

Auf TGA bin ich aufmerksam geworden, als ich einen Konzertausschnitt von Bruce Springsteenzusammen mit Brian Fallon gesehen habe. Da dachte ich: Wer ist denn das? Mir hat die Stimme gefallenund ich hab mir gleich die Lieder auf der MySpace-Seite von TGA angehört. Dann habe ich direkt alle 3 Alben von TGA bestellt.Diese Band hat in mir die gleiche Begeisterung hervorgerufen wie damals Bruce Springsteen.Kauft Euch am Besten alle 3 Alben. Ihr werdet es nicht bereuen. Auch wenn "The '59 Sound" für meinen Geschmackdas bisher beste Album ist.

Con questo disco ho scoperto i The Gaslight Anthem, è una vera bomba sonora da consumare sul piatto, con brani che si susseguono a ritmi elevatissimi.Solo per la title track varrebbe la pena acquistarlo e magari, come ho fatto io, prendere a ruota anche gli altri album del gruppo.

The Gaslight Anthem scheinen schon durchaus eine Weile zu existieren, und man vernahm so gar nichts von ihnen in den Sphären der deutschen Underground-Landschaft. Jettzt legen sie bereits ihr zweites Album vor, und man hat sie immer noch nicht so recht wahrgenommen.Und das ist gut so! Denn so bleibt dieses wunderbar feinfarbige, emotional ansprechende Werk der Band lange authentisch und fungiert als treuer Begleiter vor allem zu jener Zeit, an dem die Nacht einem nicht mehr von der Seite weicht.Als Favoriten kann ich den Titelsong "The '59 Sound" empfehlen, den Opener "Great Expectations", und "Here's looking at you, kid". Im Ganzen fällt wirklich kein Lied so sehr ab, dass man sagen könnte, diese Platte wäre nicht rund.In diesem Sinne kann man hoffen, die Bnad hält die Flagge hoch und beschert der Hörerschaft weitere Werke wie dieses - denn sie sind mehr als nur Tonträger mit Liedern.

They’re the Springsteen that never got out of the garage. Most underrated band in the past 10 years.

Nachdem ich vom aktuellen Album "Handwritten" (August 2012) total begeistert war, hab ich mir Vorgängeralben von Gaslight Anthem gekauf und bin auch von denen total begeistert. In den Musikrezensionen wird Gaslight Anthem als Punkband beschrieben, daß kommt mir nicht so vor, find ich aber auch nicht schlimm. Die Musik ist guter und solider Rock.

super album von gaslight anthem und erst recht auf vinyl. macht einfach doch noch etwas mehr her und hängt jetzt an unserer wand als deko (natürlich nur wenn wir sie nicht gerade auflegen).

Gaslight Anthem's "The '59 Sound" ist meiner Meinung nach das beste Album der vier Jungs aus New Jersey.Die Platte wartet mit drei absoluten Smash-Hits (Great Expectations, The 59 Sound und Old White Lincoln) auf, verschießt dennoch nicht ihr Pulver zu Beginn. Eine rund um gelungene Platte, die besonders mit ihren Retro-Effekten in Design, Sound (besonders das Knistern vor "Great Expectations") und Atmosphäre punktet.Ich kann diese Platte/CD nur jedem Fan von Indie-Rock Musik empfehlen.
