Great alternative to Soy
I love exploring different flavors. But with a soy allergy, this wonderful umami flavor has been missing from my repertoire. I also look to find products that are minimally processed and contain ingredients that I can recognize as food.Recently, I came across South River Chickpea Miso. The label boasts that it is made from Certified Organic Chickpeas using Traditionally Wood-Fired and Unpasteurized methodology. It also states it contains no GMO ingredients. The net weight of the product is 16oz.The list of ingredients is Deep Well Water, lightly polished organic brown rice, organic chickpeas, sun dried sea salt, organic sea vegetables and koji culture. Not one chemical or preservative is included in this very clean product. Given the pure ingredients, the miso must be refrigerated but it does not provide a used by date but rather states when refrigerated it can be kept for an unlimited time.Serving size is 1 teaspoon with 75 servings in the glass container. Calories per serving is 10. It contains zero protein or fat, 170 mg sodium and 2 grams of carbohydrates but no added sugars. Some of the key points on the label include• Entirely hand crafted in the century old Japanese farmhouse tradition.• Slow cooked beans on a massive masonry stove – wood fired.• Rich flavor and distinctive whole grain texture• Contains millions of active probiotic micro-organisms and enzymesWays in which this miso can be used mirrors soy-based miso including soups, stews, stir fries, marinades, and dressings to name a few. I tried the recipe found on the label for chickpea leek soup. I also created a dish from Brown Rice Raman with bok choy, celery, red pepper, mushrooms, and roasted chicken flavored with a miso sauce. I found the flavor to be wonderfully pleasing to the palate. The biggest complaint found in the oneline reviews is the seal on the jar being broken and the Miso leaking. I did not experience this complaint. Given my favorable experience, I would recommend this product for people who have a sensitivity or allergy to soy. It provides the same umami flavor and is delicious.

Jar leaked and product stunk - threw it away
The jar was sealed with screw top lid and foil tape. It was moist and sticky even though the tape was not broken. The product smelled highly fermented and nearly rancid, I understand I am buying a fermented product but the smell was so off-putting and I really didn't know if it was still good. I kept it for a few days but ultimately I was afraid to eat it so I threw it away. I'll be purchasing miso from a local store so that I have less risk of getting a spoiled product. The company needs to provide more secure packaging and a better description of what is a normal smell.

So Grateful for This Soy Free Miso!
Really delicious miso flavor without the soy. So glad to find this product. It did leak a little in transit, but was not a big mess.

Just like the real thing
My son has a soy allergy but loves Japanese food. This is a great substitute. Tastes very close to the real thing. It is a bit pricey but it is better than going without

defective - contents came spoiled, spilling out from under a closed lide - unable to return
package was fine, I've had the product directly from the manufacturer in the past and its good, but this product came with the contents spilled out from under the lid, with portions dried out and wet on the outside. there is no way to file this for a refund or return, and eventually you can drill down to a phone number for the seller, which is always giving a busy signal. can't recommend.

Worth it for soy allergies, better than the red bean miso
Great alternative for soy allergies. It’s a lighter flavor than the red bean miso by this brand. The miso isn’t as deep as the red bean one but is more similar to regular miso. It’s expensive but I would buy it again due to soy allergies.

good when it arrives unopened
I have used this before. The taste is amazing. Unfortunately, like other reviewers, my package arrived with the jar leaking all over and the box was wet. The paper seal was intact, but the manufacturer should use a different vessel. This is a fermented food, and I can only think that the gas from fermentation is what breaks the del, especially when I have witnessed the tossing of packages in the delivery process.
