This LOUISVILLE , KENTUCKY group had a hit single with " YOU , I " , which was played extensively in Louisville and other radio stations . I bought this album when it first came out and I played it a lot !! My favorite songs are " YOU , I ", " STAY WITH ME " ," THE LIGHT " , and " WENDEGAHL THE WARLOCK " . " WENDEGAHL THE WARLOCK " was released as an edited single (5:45) versus the aibum's (6:11) version featuring the flip side of " THE LIGHT (2:25). One of the things that made the song " YOU , I " famous was the feedback guitar intro. This LP is on cd titled " THE RUGBYS MEET LAZARUS " .

Rugbys - 'Hot Cargo' (Akarma)
Originally put out in 1969. Looks to be the Rugbys sole proper release - psych band comes out of Louisville, Kentucky. Tracks that managed to lure me in were the semi-recognizable opener "You, I" (must've heard this tune on a various artists CD before), the inspiring "King & Queen Of The World", "The Light", the radio-friendly "Rockin' All Over Again", "For A Love Gone" and the six-minute "Wendegahl The Warlock" which features some rather soulful vocals. Line-up: Ed Vernon - organ, piano & vocals, Steve McNicol - guitar, Mike Hoerni - bass and Glen Howerton - drums. Recommended for fans of The Litter, Amboy Dukes and possible Iron Butterfly or even Blue Cheer.

The 60's at their best....
I've never met anyone who was young in the 60's that didn't like the music! Who could forget such classics as 'Reflections of my Life', 'I had Too Much To Dream Last Night', 'Happenings Ten Years Time Ago', 'A Question of Temperature', 'Love Machine', 'I Belong To Nobody', and of course 'You I'. With an almost perfect 60's presentation the Rugbys gave us one of the last episodes of psychedellic rock. Here was a song that could get inside your head and at the same time make your feet move across the dance floor. The last year of the sixties was, in retrospect, bittersweet, since the music that followed was so diferent. No more psychedellic, no more real innovation, disco was upon us and dancing became the main focus of people weary of a war that they didn't want and looking for total release in their off time. But back to 1969: this was a year to be remembered. For the first time human beings walked on the moon! Star Trek (the original series) was cancelled, and The Rugbys gave us a song for the ages.

You, I
I always liked the song "YOU,I". In 1969 You It was a fairly often played radio song. Hard rock, kinks-like riff, Iron Butterfly-like vocals, and 60s style psychedelic lyrics..."you...are the color blue, and i'm looking through, at a magic hue"...ah, something like that. Good song, played along side Green River by CCR and Fire by Hendrix. God, I loved 60s radio. The rest of the album sort of just played along...but it was a nice listen once in a while. Glad I saved my copy. Don't think I'll try real hard to find a CD copy though.
